چکیده

This paper investigates the phenomenon of polysemy: a single word with two or multiple related senses (e.g. run in run a half marathon, run on gasoline, run a shop, etc.). While it is largely unproblematic from the point of view of communication, polysemy poses a range of theoretical and descriptive problems. This has been described as the polysemy paradox (Ravin & Leacock 2000). In this paper, I claim that the source of the paradox lies with the traditional assumption that polysemy is primarily a fact about language, i.e. a phenomenon requiring an explanation in terms of the workings of the language system. Against this lexical semantic view, I argue that polysemy should be seen as a natural consequence of how communication works; it results from our capacity to infer the meanings/thoughts that speakers intend to communicate to us, taking the linguistic evidence as crucial but not fully determining of content. In this way, polysemy is rooted in the more general phenomenon of underdetermination of a speaker’s meaning by the language, whose study belongs to the realm of pragmatics. This pragmatic approach, I argue, provides a more promising way of tackling the theoretical challenges posed by polysemy: one that contributes to resolving the paradox.

A Pragmatic Solution to the Value Problem of Knowledge

We value possessing knowledge more than true belief. Both someone with knowledge and someone with a true belief possess the correct answer to a question. Why is knowledge more valuable than true belief if both contain the correct answer? I examine the philosophy of American pragmatist John Dewey and then I offer a novel solution to this question often called the value problem of knowledge. I pr...

Allegory: Structure, Interpretation and Polysemy

In allegories polysemy relates not only to the context and the audience’s understanding but also to the structural characters of these texts. This paper investigates the function of structural and narrative properties in the creation of multiple interpretations of an allegory. Focusing on the events and following a unique story-line is the most important trait in helping to read the alleg...

A Pragmatic Theory of Induction

This paper develops a qualitative, logical, theory of induction. It begins with Hempel’s attempt to produce a “purely syntactical” theory of confirmation and the demise of this attempt as a result of Goodman’s paradox. Ideas from the informal, pragmatic, solutions to this paradox proposed by Goodman and Quine are then adopted, adapted and extended in order to produce a formal, pragmatic theory ...

The completeness of the pragmatic solution to Moore's paradox in belief: a reply to Chan

Moore’s paradox in belief is the fact that beliefs of the form ‘p and I do not believe that p’ are ‘absurd’ yet possibly true. Writers on the paradox have nearly all taken the absurdity to be a form of irrationality. These include those who give what Timothy Chan calls the ‘pragmatic solution’ to the paradox. This solution turns on the fact that having the Moorean belief falsifies its content. ...
